Amex Purchase Protection for Lost Items

American Express credit cards come with purchase protection which usually covers lost, stolen or damaged items for up to 90 days from the date of purchase. You can see the coverage terms for each American Express credit card here.

American Express has now made a minor change in the terms of Purchase Protection coverage for most cards and will no longer cover lost items. That includes most cards with no annual fee and annual fees under $200:

For these cards you will see that Purchase Protection applied to “events which results in damage to or theft of a covered purchase”. For other cards the terms state “damage to, losing or theft of a covered purchase”.

If you have lost and item, and you thing it might have been stolen, you will need to file a report. You have to do that before filing a claim, and will need to send in the written report of the theft filed with the appropriate authority.

This benefit is now available on premium cards only, which are cards with higher annual fees such as:

It’s also important to note that cards that do cover stolen items, they will not do so if the item was lost when “under the temporary care and control of a third party other than the Eligible Beneficiary, including a common carrier”.
