The funny thing is that a massive stock devaluation actually has no real effect on the operation of the company. The biggest effect is that the board of directors might be really angry and fire the CEO. But companies don't actually get a dime when their stock goes up or down, not unless it's an IPO. Stock trades represent money moving from one investor to another, not to and from the company itself.
What so sad about the stock market is all of this money that people can potentially make by investing into shares is generated by the workers. Without the workers there would be no profit to give to shareholders and CEOs. It’s not right. And also stocks are not the only way to invest and secure money for the future and protect the value of your money from inflation. Of course with more ethical investing you take a hit on the actual amount you end up gaining but you can still be a multimillionaire with strategic investment strategies and enough surplus to place into those investments. Being a multimillionaire is more than good enough. If you’ve got the money to invest I really would recommend avoiding stocks/shares in companies that aren’t worker owned.
The ironic part of this is their quantum super computers are some of the best and if they just decided to leverage that against the traditional computer companies feeding the data centers they could easily pull ahead but you rarely hear them talking about it. Even if its not commercially viable at this point theyre passing more qubits in their not so powerfull ones to make a whole data center look irrelevant. Virtual laboratories and high level physics and mathematical modeling we've only dreamed of probably arent too far off if they chose their next moves wisely
This is the problem with giving themselves stock, they will always want the stock price to go up. Boards should just be replaced with AI, save a fortune.
It's almost as if we're only making one thing now, and that thing is probably going to be the literal end of us, because it's a decision making tool that has no consequences for bad outcomes and neither do its makers. A little girl selling lemonade at the end of her driveway in America faces more restrictive legal issues than the AI industry does. As a species, we're screwed harder than Bonnie Blue at this point.
And this is why business is f**ked. Notional values rather than asset and business values, being used to drive the business into the ground in order to extract profit now, not maintain the business long term.
how? big companies systems shut down the market if it fluctuates with more than like 6-12%. it also redo the day if they lost too much money on something like their AI-computations which runs everyone big in stocks buy and sell; take a wrong choice and escalated sells&buying off wrong things etc…
but its disgusting that big firms can use stocks like they do…
This sort of thing always makes me think of the end of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"
“You have to distinguish between two things – the Swedish economy and the Swedish stock market. The Swedish economy is the sum of all the goods and services that are produced in this country every day. There are telephones from Ericsson, cars from Volvo, chickens from Scan, and shipments from Kiruna to Skovde. That's the Swedish economy, and it's just as strong or weak today as it was a week ago…
The Stock Exchange is something very different. There is no economy and no production of goods and services. There are only fantasies in which people from one hour to the next decide that this or that company is worth so many billions, more or less. It doesn't have a thing to do with the Swedish economy.”
If it was a solid business producing something of value and not borrowing to the gills. A drop in the market would be a great opportunity for investors.
Should I even be applying to intern there 😭🙏 ?
Why do these guys look just like the guys from Kodak?

If they don't fire that guy for saying that stupidity, then they deserve to go under.
Let’s bail them out!!!🎉
Lmao you can do SNPS next, they dropped 36% in a day
I didn't even know IBM still existed. I thought they went away like 30 years ago.
Traded equity has nothing to do with company. That money doesn't come to company anyways
Should I be concerned about my IBM pension? I’m sure they the fund heavily invested in IBM stocks 😳
Dont worry, the market is obsessed with "buying the dip", it wouldnt surprise me if theyve already bounced back. 🙃
It’s insane what determines if a company lives or dies is conjecture and rumor, not performance.
"Ahhhh Fuuuuck" is just poetry 😂😂😂
That's when you buy your own stocks back…
Eventually you need them. The software companies will just buy them.

..are we progressing on a timeline where IBM will be unknown to our grandchildren?
Just a genuinely good actor using his powers to keep is in the loop on YouTube
Still breaks me that stock matter so much, i mean the company didn't change in one day
IBM shit itself

Just because your huge; doesn’t make you invulnerable..
It’s all dominoes…
(Not the pizza chain)
If the shift is based on emotions and fomo rather than fundamentals…. Yknow…
IBM IS a hardware manufacturer though
IBM used to be hardware. Just saying.
Bring back Thinkpads, cowards!
Supermicro lost over 30% in a day when it was disclosed they were smuggling GPU's to China quite recently
Exactly why you run a company to be good at what it does and not what the speculators can jump on for a quick profit and dump.
And this is why business is f**ked. Notional values rather than asset and business values, being used to drive the business into the ground in order to extract profit now, not maintain the business long term.
Not a rational market these days, is it?
IBM up 76% in the last 5 years so still just a one day thing.

I am shocked that IBM is only worth $220 Billion, I thought they would be a trillion dollar company
This sort of thing always makes me think of the end of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"

Wnen U re passing CONSULTING IBM courses at the same time and then "the news")))
Change that I into L and that's basically what happened.
Cls celestica was started by IBM but is now the BEST hardware company on earth for the AI change.
There is a difference between the asset value of a company and the casino valuation of its shares
He could be such a good actor
