Key Points
  • The typical U.S. public school schedules about 1,231 hours a year, spread over roughly 179 days of 6.9 hours each.
  • Kansas requires 186 school days while Colorado requires 160. Students in the five longest-schedule states get 133 more hours a year than those in the five shortest.
  • Scheduled time overstates learning time, since 22.6% of students were chronically absent in 2024-25. Four-day school weeks cut about 85 hours a year.

American students spend about 1,231 hours in school each year, but where a child lives changes that number by weeks. A new Education Week review of state requirements found that Colorado sets the lowest bar at 160 instructional days, while Kansas sets the highest at 186. A review of 74 studies found that more time in school raises test scores, so those rules carry real weight for families.

No federal law sets how long students attend school. State lawmakers and local school boards make that call, and several states are rewriting their rules. EdWeek reports that Oklahoma will raise its minimum from 166 to 173 days in 2027-28. West Virginia will replace its 180-day rule with a 900-hour minimum that same year. The changes follow other state rewrites of school rules, such as New York’s move to end the Regents exam requirement.

How Much Time Do U.S. Students Spend In School Each Year?

The typical K-12 public school student is scheduled for 1,231 hours of school a year. That figure comes from a Brown University and Stanford analysis published in Education Next, which used 2017-18 federal survey data. Schools averaged 178.6 days a year and 6.9 hours a day, with high schools running slightly longer than elementary schools.

Over 13 years from kindergarten through 12th grade, those hours add up to about 16,000. Parents weighing using a 529 plan for private elementary and high school can ask any school for its annual hours, since state minimums are only a floor.

Which States Require The Most And Least School Time?

Kansas requires the most instructional days at 186, and Colorado requires the fewest at 160. EdWeek counts 32 states that require at least 180 days. That 26-day difference grows to 338 days over a K-12 career, close to two full school years. Kansas’s minimum is 16% higher than Colorado’s, which clears the 10% threshold that researchers tie to measurable gains in achievement.

Other states count hours instead of days. A Thomas B. Fordham Institute review of state minimums found that Texas required 1,260 hours a year as of 2023. Arizona high schools needed only 720. Texas sets that high bar even as its public schools lost 76,000 students in one year. South Carolina now requires 1,080 hours on top of 180 days.

Every state’s rules appear in the table below, based on the Education Commission of the States’ 50-state comparison with 2026 changes reported by EdWeek. Families weighing a move can check these minimums alongside each state’s 529 plan options.

Where Do Students Actually Spend The Most Hours?

Actual schedules run above the legal minimums. Kraft and Novicoff found median scheduled hours range from 1,131 a year in Hawaii to 1,313 in Texas. Students in the top five states, Texas, Nebraska, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama, spend 133 more hours a year in school than students in Hawaii, Nevada, Maine, Oregon and Rhode Island. That adds up to 1.4 extra years of school by graduation, before counting any dual enrollment college classes.

How Does The U.S. Compare To Other Countries?

U.S. students get more required class time than students in most developed countries, but their math scores land right at the international average. The OECD’s Education at a Glance 2025 report puts U.S. compulsory instruction at 8,917 hours across primary and middle school, against an OECD average of 7,642. Only four of the 35 OECD countries with national data require more: Australia, Denmark, Costa Rica and Colombia. U.S. teens still scored 463 in math on the latest PISA exam, exactly the OECD average.

The U.S. gets its hours from long days, not a long year. American schools average about 179 days, while the OECD average is 186 days in primary school. A typical U.S. day runs 6.9 hours, which pushes total time above most countries. Research on how longer school days affect achievement finds the payoff shrinks once days are already long.

How Does U.S. School Time Compare With China, Japan And South Korea?

The top-scoring Asian systems require less classroom time than the U.S., not more. Japan requires 7,260 hours across primary and middle school, and South Korea requires 6,453. That’s about 1,700 and 2,500 fewer hours than the U.S. Japan still scored 525 in math and South Korea 522 on PISA 2025, about 60 points above American students. Both countries also beat U.S. scores in reading and science on the same global exam.

China doesn’t report instruction time to the OECD. Its national curriculum plan, as published in Guangdong’s implementation rules (PDF File), sets 9,522 class periods over nine years of compulsory school. Primary periods last 40 minutes and middle school periods last 45. That works out to about 6,640 hours of new instruction by The College Investor’s math. Students in Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang still posted the world’s top PISA math score at 612.

Neither figure counts private tutoring or after-school academies, since both measure only required school lessons. In the U.S., families who pay for that extra help can now cover tutoring with 529 plan money. Singapore, which ranked second in math at 563, doesn’t report hours to the OECD, and its school calendar points to about 8,500.

How Does The U.S. Compare With Europe?

European results show the same split between time and scores. Estonia posted Europe’s top math score at 508 while requiring 6,432 hours, about 2,500 fewer than the U.S. Poland requires the fewest hours in the OECD at 5,304 and still outscored American students by 21 points. The United Kingdom sets no national minimum for instruction time in England, and its students scored 488.

More time doesn’t guarantee a top score in Europe either. France requires 8,210 hours and Spain requires 7,891, yet both scored below the U.S. at 458 and 457. Germany, Italy and Finland all finished within six points of the U.S. with fewer required hours. The same disconnect shows up with money at home, where New York City schools are projected to spend about $43,778 per student and still trail the nation in fourth-grade math.

How Much School Time Do Students Actually Miss?

Scheduled hours overstate time in class. An American Enterprise Institute analysis reported by Chalkbeat found 22.6% of students were chronically absent in 2024-25, down from a peak of 28.3% in 2022. A chronically absent student misses at least 10% of the year, or about 18 days of a 180-day calendar. Attendance matters for older students too, since missed classes cut into time for SAT and ACT prep now that more colleges require scores.

Four-day weeks cut time by design. More than 2,100 schools in 26 states used a four-day schedule in 2024-25, according to an Education Week report on new state limits. Kraft and Novicoff found those students get 85 fewer instructional hours a year, or about 12 school days at a 6.9-hour pace. For working parents, the fifth weekday becomes a child care bill, an expense a dependent care FSA can pay with pre-tax dollars.

What School Time Means For Family Budgets

A 180-day calendar leaves about 185 days a year, counting weekends and summer, when children are not in class. Starting in 2026, a dependent care FSA lets families set aside up to $7,500 pre-tax for care of children under 13. Summer day camp counts, while overnight camp does not. That same contribution is one of several pre-tax moves that can lower a student loan payment under RAP and IBR.

Families who buy more learning time have new tools as well. The annual 529 limit for K-12 costs doubled to $20,000 in 2026, and the 529 plan expansion now covers tutoring, books and testing fees. Starting in 2027, taxpayers can claim the $1,700 Education Freedom Tax Credit for gifts to K-12 scholarship groups in states that opt in.

What Parents Can Do Now

  1. Ask for your school’s annual hours. Compare them with the 1,231-hour national average and with the research on how school time affects scores.
  2. Track attendance by the semester. Eighteen missed days in a 180-day year makes a student chronically absent. Catching it early protects the time students need for the SAT and ACT.
  3. Budget for days without school. Enroll in a dependent care FSA during open enrollment to cover after-school care and day camp.
  4. Pay for extra learning with a 529. Tutoring and testing fees are now qualified 529 plan expenses for K-12 students.
  5. Turn high school hours into college credit. Dual enrollment lets students earn credits that cut what families pay later.

FAQs

Does More Time In School Raise Test Scores?

More time raises scores, but only in larger doses. A review of 74 studies on time in school found a 10% increase in total time is the threshold most likely to produce measurable gains. Adding a single day to the school year produced only small math effects.

Which Country Has The Longest School Day?

Among OECD countries, Costa Rica requires the longest primary school day at about 5.7 hours of instruction. The College Investor calculated that by dividing required annual hours by school days in the OECD’s 2025 instruction time data. The U.S. ranks third at about 5.4 hours, and its middle schoolers get about 5.7 hours a day. Those figures count only class time, so the full day with lunch and recess runs longer than the class time researchers tie to achievement.

What State Has The Shortest School Hours?

Hawaii has the shortest actual school schedule, with a median of 1,131 hours a year, according to the Kraft and Novicoff analysis. By law, Arizona sets the lowest high school minimum at 720 hours, and Colorado sets the fewest required days at 160 among states with a day minimum. Shorter school days can mean more paid after-school care, an expense a dependent care FSA covers with pre-tax dollars.
