2 Sapphire Cards, ‘Pop-Up Jail’
After Chase announced the full details of the upcoming Chase Sapphire Reserve Card changes, The Points Guy confirmed the ability to hold both the Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred at the same time. Previously, cardholders could only have one card from the Sapphire family.
This is a welcome update from Chase as this opens up the opportunity to earn 2 Sapphire bonuses since you could only earn one every 48 months. Chase provided comments about “transitioning away from the family of cards every 48 month eligibility to a same product premium eligibility. The timeframe will be longer than 48 months.”
In similar fashion to American Express, they also hinted at an Amex-like “pop-up jail” warning to card applicants that are “not eligible for a bonus offer and given the choice to continue the application or cancel the application with no impact to their credit score.” Whether this replaces the Chase 5/24 rule or not remains a mystery.
We’ve seen this on some co-branded card applications before, such as with Marriott Bonvoy cards between Chase and Amex.
No further details have been confirmed about Chase’s Sapphire cards welcome bonus eligibility. We could only speculate that Chase could make those who earned a Sapphire Reserve bonus ineligible for a Sapphire Preferred bonus (or vice versa) if they wanted to go exactly the way Amex sets its “family rule” when it comes to earning bonuses.
