Wave of Amex Shutdowns

🔃 Update (Oct 24, 2025) – Another wave of shutdowns citing the same reason (HT: reddit/USCF).

➡️ Original article (Apr 29, 2025) –  There are several reports in recent days that Amex is shutting down accounts for misuse. These reports come from reddit and uscardforum. It’s not clear exactly what the misuse is.

The account cancelation notice from American Express is quite generic:

We are writing to inform you that, after a recent review of your American Express® account(s) referenced above, we have cancelled the account(s) due to indicia of misuse.

Due to the nature of this cancellation, the account(s) listed above and any other accounts, if applicable, will neither be eligible for reinstatement nor for Membership Rewards® points redemptions.

It’s important to note

You remain legally obligated to pay American Express for all charges incurred on the account(s) listed above under the terms of the Cardmember Agreement.

Contacting us

To the extent you disagree with this decision, please refer to the Claims Resolution section of your applicable Card Member Agreement(s).

Sincerely,

American Express

At least one redditor says they don’t really abuse anything other than a few typical HUCA on retention offers and receiving regular signup bonuses on a few cards, with the last one being back in 2023. Another report is about US citizens that got the American branded product in the US but live in Mexico for extended periods of time through the year because of business.

If your Amex accounts are canceled, then you should transfer your points out on the same day by calling in. New Yorkers get 90 days to redeem, exchange, or otherwise use any accumulated credit card points.

Have you been affected by these shutdowns?
