Possible Amex Blue Cash Preferred Revamp

American Express is surveying possible changes for the Blue Cash Preferred card. There survey includes different versions of the card with higher annual fees and new benefits. Let’s see the details.

What Is NOT Changing Much

  • 6% back at U.S. supermarkets with varying spending cap. One version is 8% back for $6K annually.
  • 3% at U.S. gas stations
  • 1% back on everything else

Annual Fee

Amex is testing a range from $125 up to $160, with several variants offering a $0 intro fee for the first year. The current card sits at $95 (waived the first year), so every variant represents an annual fee increase.

New Bonus Categories

  • U.S. transit (3–4%)
  • Fast casual dining (3–4%)
  • Wireless spend (3–4%)
  • U.S. online retail providers (3%, up to $10K)

New Partner Benefits

These benefits are mentioned on different variants of the card:

  • 5% back with AirBnB, Amex Travel, or Expedia
  • PetSmart savings (10% cash back or $15/month statement credit)
  • $99 annual membership credit for Walmart+, Grubhub+, or Uber One
  • $10/month statement credit for Disney+, Resy, AI subscription, or cloud storage

Insurance/Protection Perks

  • Cell phone protection
  • Car rental loss and damage insurance

Negative Changes

  • Unlimited 6% streaming cash back maybe be capped or drop down to 3% in some options.
  • The Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ $10 monthly credit is not mentioned in most survey variants.
