Why are thousands of Australians leaving the country to retire in Southeast Asia? In this video, I break down exactly why more Aussies are choosing to retire in Thailand, Bali, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines, and how much money you actually need to make it work.

We’re talking real monthly budgets, visa requirements, Age Pension portability rules, superannuation access overseas, healthcare insurance, and the hidden risks nobody warns you about.

  1. I maybe asking a novice question, but why do you mention rent? Does it mean most retired people dont have their own house or, by rent, are you referring to aged care fees?

  2. Mate I don’t think you can live in Thailand with the age pension, to retire in Thailand you need proof of income of 65000 bath a month that’s 2794 OZ dollars. Australian pension is 2200 months without adding on health insurance and the other hiding extras ,Thailand today is not Thailand of 1980 .

  3. you worked your whole life get to 61 and have to pay rent… now i do se the problem. maybe if you bought a house, you could have paid it off by now

  4. Great advice mate for 1st time interest in Asia. I live in Northern China with my Chinese/Aussie wife & two Cairns born Tin Lids. We will be here another three yrs & then return to Cairns for their high school. I’m not even contemplating an Aussie retirement. Sorry to say as a former Australian Soldier our country is politically stuffed. Asia is by far a better lifestyle. Met a few Aussies in Borneo/Sarawak, & in Da Nang, met a few who came to Da Nang from Cambodia on my recent trip to Vietnam. They all love being abroad & knowing their $$ will sustain them longer than at home in Aus.

  5. As a Thai living in AU, the cost of living is much cheaper in TH comparing to here. But unfortunately, the official language in Thailand is still Thai, and no one in the banks, government officers, or court will talk to you in English. Hence, to live permanently in TH without knowing the language and honest locals is difficult. The system that the society and economy runs are very different from AU, even me myself felt it difficult to stay somewhere in Thailand that im not familiar with.

  6. I am collecting a PSS defined benefit superannuation pension. I am told that if I was to move overseas (Thailand) and declare myself as a non resident of Australia for tax purposes, I would be taxed at 30 cents in every dollar from dollar 1.

  7. Umm Chang Mai in Thailand was an unbearably hot and congested/polluted city. That was over 10 years ago. It must be a hell scape with humidity now with further climate change. It was also boring for any avrerage aussie. Yes food is cheap. I suspect housing as well.

  8. It’s like going in circles, now the locals are going to complain that they can get rental, can’t buy property because foreigners are moving in paying higher prices making it out of reach for locals .

  9. I’m under 30 and already want to retire lol, sydney is too expensive and just exhausting. I make 150k aud annually and just barely keeping ends meet.
